KMFDM – Doin' It Again!

KMFDM has spent decades building a distinctive visual identity around the same attitude as the music: loud, confrontational, satirical, and unmistakably their own. Their catalog spans albums, singles, compilations, live records, and reissues, with artwork evolving along the way through different eras and designers. The result was a huge body of work with plenty of personality, but not always much consistency from one release to the next.

When KMFDM began remastering and reissuing their back catalog, I was brought in to create a visual system that could tie everything together without erasing what made the original artwork unique. I developed a consistent approach for covers, typography, lyrics, photography, credits, and packaging that could work across both old and new releases. That system became the standard for the catalog and has continued to be used on KMFDM releases ever since.

KMFDM‘s Visual and Conceptual Revolution

Over the years, KMFDM had built a recognizable visual identity, but decades of releases, different designers, and changing formats left the catalog without a consistent system. When the band regained the rights to its back catalog, it created an opportunity to remaster and reissue the music while also giving the artwork the same attention. Expanded liner notes, archival photography, additional artwork, and redesigned packaging all became part of a larger effort to make the catalog feel connected without losing the personality of the original releases.
