See What Lurks Beyond the Shadows in Kentucky

Kentucky is full of ghost stories, strange sightings, local legends, and places with a reputation for being haunted. Kentucky Tourism wanted to turn that side of the state into a reason to travel, giving curious visitors a way to explore the folklore and paranormal stories tied to different regions.
Working with Coomer, I helped shape the visual direction for Kentucky After Dark, creating a dark, pulp-horror-inspired campaign built around illustrated creatures, haunted landmarks, and destination-specific artwork. The system extended across the website, travel materials, social content, and campaign graphics, turning Kentucky’s stranger stories into a cohesive tourism experience.

Raking in Profits in Kentucky After Dark

Ghouls Gone Wild

The campaign pulled from old horror posters, pulp illustration, roadside attraction graphics, and classic monster imagery without turning the whole thing into parody. The goal was to make it creepy enough to feel fun, but polished enough to still work as an official tourism campaign.

I used a limited palette, gothic type, dramatic lighting, and exaggerated creature imagery to give the work a consistent look across very different stories. Aliens, ghosts, cryptids, and haunted places all had to feel like they belonged in the same strange corner of Kentucky.

Take Your Travels to Another Level

A Fascinating (and Frightful) Journey Awaits

The campaign needed to do more than look spooky. It had to help people actually find and explore the places behind the stories. That led to a travel guide built around haunted locations, unexplained sightings, local legends, and destinations spread across the state.

The design treated each stop like part of a larger field guide to the unknown, mixing practical travel information with custom illustration and story-driven graphics. The result was something that worked both as a tourism resource and as a collectible piece of the campaign.
